Oral surgery

Today, oral surgery is much more than simply performing surgical intervention at different parts of the mouth. The name is rather confusing as the development taken place in the course of time was not followed by the denomination of the special field of ”oral surgery”. In professional circles the oral and maxillofacial surgery name (this is the official name of the oral and maxillofacial clinic of a university), however, this is long and complicated, therefore, no wonder it did not come to stay. Actually, there is no need to discard the name oral surgery if you know what the term nowadays means. Let’s clarify this point first.

Starting from the other, professional denomination of oral surgery the surgeon deals with operations performed on the cheek-bones and the jaws. The job of the surgeon in most cases is performing serious dental interventions known by everyone: root-canal therapy, tooth extraction, treatment of the specially sensitive wisdom-teeth, and treatment of the purulent inflammations covering the jaws, indicating serious illness of the teeth. These types of problems, unfortunately, occur in a rather great number, so – although they cannot be taken as routine operations as each operation requires the same level of attention – dental surgeons treat these kinds of illnesses, problems in most of their working hours.

According to the name oral and maxillofacial surgery the dental surgeon deals with the reparation of damages (breaks) of the jaw, and the surgery of the joints.

Facial surgery deals with the treatment of the different damages, illnesses, and tumours of the skull. Besides the above, dental surgeons are also able to perform much more specialized operations as well. The curing, treatment of these very rarely occurring problems include removal of tumours, operation of cleft palates and cleft-lips, elimination of biting problems by operations.

Last but not least, dental surgeons also perform operations which literally create basis for different dental processes, these include interventions preceding dental prosthesis.
