Sinus Lifting
Sinus lifting is performed when an implantation operation is intended to be performed, however, the physical conditions of the operation are missing within the patient’s mouth, more exactly in the upper jawbone.
The implantation performed on the upper jawbone is more complex, its curing time is longer than those of the identical operations performed on the lower jawbone. Therefore, it is especially important to have the upper jawbone perfectly prepared to receive the implant. If the upper jawbone is not thick enough due to decaying, the implant will not be able to firm properly, therefore it will move, slip out, and the structure and the tooth built on it will move together with it. Furthermore, since implants fix a whole tooth, several teeth or even a denture, therefore, if the place of the implants is not prepared appropriately, these may cause severe problems.
Therefore, the point of sinus lifting is to provide a proper basis for another operation. Although the sinus lifting cannot be seen, it must not be left out for being invisible.
The name of sinus lifting comes from the fact that the upper jawbone is being thickened towards the sinus. As the jawbone becomes thicker, the basis of the sinus is lifted. Bones or artificial bones may be used for this procedure. After making the jawbone thicker, implants can securely be inserted.
